The mission of the Baltimore Police Athletic League is to reduce juvenile-invoked crime and victimization by allowing young people, particularly those living in "at risk" neighborhoods, to interact with police officers in a positive setting, while participating in constructive alternatives to antisocial behavior and boredom. PAL's after-school and summer academic and recreational activities are run by Baltimore police officers, community service officers, and parent and community volunteers. The program's four components - character development, home assistance and academic enrichment, arts and cultural activities - are present in the overall plan for every PAL center. More than 7000 youths between the ages of 7 and 17 annually attend programs at PAL's twenty-seven locations in Baltimore City. Each PAL center is staffed by at least two police officers and one community service officer. Adult volunteers and instructors help with homework and other academic activities, teach specialized classes, chaperone field trips, organize clubs, and serve as mentors. Redeemer began its partnership with the Lillian Jones PAL Center in 1997 with an opportunity for parishioners to provide Christmas gifts for children at the center. Needs: Volunteers are needed to work with arts and crafts, and particularly anyone with an interest in crocheting, knitting, or cooking. Homework assistants, sports enthusiasts, and computer trainers are also needed.
