Baptisms
Holy Baptism is a sacred and joyful event in the life
of a new Christian. The Prayer Book defines it as "full initiation by
water and the Holy Spirit into Christ's Body the Church." The following
customs and practices of Redeemer will give some basic information about
this sacrament, and we ask you to read them carefully. If there are questions,
we hope you will let us know.
For more information, or to schedule a Baptism, contact
Barbara Hart by email or
by phone at 410-435-7333, extension 221.

Who may be baptized here?
Baptism is for active, attending members of the parish. If the candidate and family are newcomers who have not yet transferred their membership to Redeemer, we encourage them to do so. If the candidate and family have never before attended Redeemer, we encourage that they visit, go through the newcomer process, introduce themselves to clergy, and be sure this is where they want to be. They will need to make an appointment with the clergy to discuss baptism when ready. Children who are too young to state their beliefs
independently will be presented by parents and Godparents who will make
vows on behalf of the child and raise them in the Christian life and faith.
When the child is old enough, s/he will be able to make a mature profession
of faith at confirmation. (top)
How do I get started?
Contact Ms. Barbara Hart in the Parish Office (410-435-7333) to discuss dates for the baptism. (top)
What is the Baptismal Seminar?
Usually on the Saturday morning prior to the Sunday baptism, the officiating
clergy will conduct a Baptismal Seminar during which the meaning of Baptism
will be discussed, the order of service will be reviewed, and questions
answered. Both parents and sponsors are asked to attend this important
meeting. If it is an adult or older child being baptized, they are expected
to attend as well. In addition, older candidates should have some individual
preparation time with the clergy in the weeks beforehand. (top)
When are baptisms conducted?
The Prayer Book states that "Holy Baptism is especially appropriate at
the Easter Vigil, on the Day of Pentecost, on All Saints' Day, and on
the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord." Redeemer offers baptisms on all
of these four Holy Days as well as on the second Sunday of the other eight
months (except during Lent). Baptism is initiation into the church and
therefore only makes sense to be done during a regular Sunday service
when the full membership is present. It may be done at either the 9:00
a.m. or 11:00 a.m. services. Occasionally baptisms are done at the 8:00
a.m. service. Redeemer does not conduct private baptisms. (top)
Who can be a Godparents or Sponsors?
Godparents and sponsors are a wonderful resource and guide along the journey
of a new Christian. They are particularly helpful to children as they
grow in faith and love, learning to live life as Christians. However,
some parents, or candidates choose Jewish or non-Christian godparents/sponsors.
This is discouraged because Godparents are asked to respond to questions
that should not be asked of Jews or other non-Christians. However if the
prospective Godparent/Sponsor looks over the service for Holy Baptism
and the questions involved, and if s/he is comfortable with it, their
participation as Godparents/Sponsor may be permitted. If they are not
comfortable making the vows of a Godparent/Sponsor, they are welcomed
to participate in the service in other ways, perhaps as a reader. (top)
