Easter Meanings

Of all the many meanings of Easter, this year I add one more. 

On March 23, 1975 my daughter Lea was born.   She died in 1997.  This Easter she would have been 33 years old.  Easter Sunday this year is also for me Lea Remembrance Day.

Of all the many meanings of Easter, this year I especially claim one.  Jesus promised us that by his Death and Resurrection we receive from him the gift of eternal life.

Of all the many meanings of Easter, this year I recall all the more vividly Jesus saying to Mary in Bethany on the occasion of the death of her brother, Lazarus;

'I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?'

Of all the many meanings of Easter, this year I hold fast to my belief in Jesus as the Risen Lord.  His Resurrection gives hope to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death. 

Of all the many meanings of Easter, this year I reflect on a dear parishioner who faces the proximity of her death from recurring cancer.  With faith in Jesus Christ, she says, "God does not owe me a single day."  Her faith will sustain her to the end, and beyond into everlasting life.

Of all the many meanings of Easter, this year add your own special and unique ones.  We are the community of the Resurrected Lord.  On Easter we gather all the many meanings of Easter, offer them to God, and join hands in celebration and hope.

Of all the many meanings of Easter, the grace of God in Christ continues to pour forth yet more meanings.  I pray for you, that this Easter you may find many more meanings.
