Disciples of Christ in Community

Redeemer is about to embark on a new ministry.  The purpose of DOCC is to empower participants to deepen their spiritual formation and their experience of community in their parish.  One of the most significant aspects of this course, which makes it different from any other offering at Redeemer, is that we are doing this ministry in partnership with the pastor and people of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Baltimore.

DOCC is a program of study and sharing focused on the small group model of learning.  We will meet on Wednesday evenings for sixteen weeks, spread throughout this program year.  The specific dates are listed below.

Here are some answers to questions about DOCC:

Explore the Heart of Christian Faith

Many of us have been exposed to bits and pieces of the Christian faith all our lives
but have never really known what it is all about

What difference can the Christian faith really make in our lives?
How can we know the depth and power it has to offer?
Is there something fresh and new underneath those ancient words and beliefs?

What Is DOCC?

Disciples of Christ in Community is a congregational-based Christian formation program for adults that builds community while encouraging individual spiritual growth. Nationally, more than 25,000 people have completed the program. Previously DOCC was administered by the School of Theology Programs Center of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. It is now administered by Washington National Cathedral in the Diocese of Washington, D.C.

DOCC consists of 16 evening sessions, plus a Saturday day long session. Each session contains two parts. The first part is a presentation led by clergy. Pastor John Heinemeier and I will be the leaders, alternating the preparation for the main teaching time. This is followed by a response in small groups led by members of the congregations trained to facilitate the discussions. All presenters and facilitators receive 18 or more hours of training.

When DOCC works, it is because the small groups work, each becoming what we call in DOCC "the church in minuscule."

DOCC offers a step-by-step journey into the heart and soul of Christianity along with a community of fellow-explorers to travel with. Each session consists of a presentation followed by a conversation in a small group that will stay together for the entire course. The DOCC Journey depends to a large extent on the quality of the small-group experience, and small groups depend on the regular attendance of participants.

We will arrange for half of the meetings to be at Redeemer, and half at Faith.  When we do go to Faith, we will arrange carpooling from Redeemer.  Each small group will be co-facilitated by a member of each congregation, and each small group will be a mix of people from each.

This is DOCC.  It is an exciting and new ministry which holds the potential for you to grow in faith and deepen your relationships in church.

Please accept my invitation to join us for DOCC.  There is a one time registration fee of $50.  Scholarship funds are available by request.

Christ is calling.  Is this the right time for you to say, "Yes!"

Peace,

Paul Tunkle+
