It's here.  Deal with it.  The digital multi tasking age is fully upon us and is non reversible.  The implications are many.  From where I sit I see a few that take some getting used to.

People carry their world on a digital device no bigger than a mobile phone.  These are sometimes a real danger to their safety and that of others, such as using them while driving a car.  I often think to myself, "What makes you think you have the prerogative to endanger the lives of those I love by using that while driving?"  But it is possible that newer generations have developed skills I find unimaginable and can multi task at the speed of fiber optics.  I hope they are truly able to do many things at once.

During worship I sometimes notice people looking down.  I wish they were bowing their heads in prayer.  Sometimes this is the case.  But at other times they are texting or playing a game on their little device.  It makes no noise and seems to disturb no one else.  Yet it leads me to reflect on multi tasking as it applies to prayer and worship.  I know that in the early morning I rise and read the daily office of Morning Prayer at home.  I have memorized a great deal of the office.  So what am I doing when I am reciting silently a canticle between scripture lessons while making a pot of tea?  Or what am I doing when I am running for half and hour and reciting prayers from memory?  Is this multi tasking acceptable to Jesus?

I am reminded of an incident when someone needed Jesus to heal his daughter.  While he was on the way, he was interrupted by a woman who touched the hem of his robe and was healed.  It almost seems as if he was doing two things at once.  Did they really do that in biblical times?  I thought we invented that!

A New Clergy Associate for Redeemer

I am pleased to announce that we have successfully concluded our search for a new clergy associate.  Cristina Paglinauan has accepted my call to join the staff of Redeemer as a full time clergy associate.  She will begin her ministry among us on August 1, 2010.

Cristina is currently finishing her Master of Divinity degree at the General Theological Seminary in New York.  She is a seminarian from the Diocese of Maryland.  Assuming that she graduates on schedule in May and receives the proper approvals from the Bishop and the Standing Committee, she will be ordained as a deacon in June.  Typically she would remain in diaconal orders for six months and then be ordained to the priesthood.

Cristina is originally from Baltimore and has a strong background in academia and in education of youth.  She will be overseeing ministry with children including church school.  She will be overseeing the Redeemer Youth Group.  She will be the Chaplain to the Parish Day School.  She will be developing and strengthening ministries for and with families.  And she will share in the liturgical and pastoral ministries of the parish.

She and her husband, David, have two children, Grace who will turn 9 in May and Ben who will turn 2 years old in May.  There is so much more to share with you about Cristina but I want to allow her opportunity to introduce herself to the parish and I do not want to rush this since it will be another five months before she officially begins with us.

I want to express my thanks to the members of the Clergy Search Advisory Committee who worked for many months with me on this process.  My thanks to Hilary Klein, John Thompson, Bill Gamper, Fern Jeffries, Steve Shattuck, Pat Tarbutton, Will Kimball, Kate Litkowski and Paul Griffith.  My thanks also goes to the Redeemer Youth Group Planning Committee who played a major role in this process.  Her call comes with the full consensus support of both of these groups as well as the strong support from all the members of the vestry.

Before we welcome Cristina we will be bidding farewell and God speed to the Rev. Caroline (Stuart) Stewart.  Her ministry will conclude at the end of April.  More on this will be forthcoming.

This is a time of transition for us at Redeemer.  I cannot ever remember when it was not a time of transition.  Yet for these particular circumstances I invite you to join me in giving thanks to God in Christ for the generous guidance and provision of the Holy Spirit.

Peace,

Paul+

Thanks from Paul's Place for Christmas Gifts

From all of the staff at Paul's Place, we would like to thank you for donating new toys for our annual holiday gift shop.  We supported 120 families in the neighborhood this holiday season.  With your support we provided parents and guardians the opportunity to hand select new toys for their children.  This year 363 children received holiday gifts.

The holiday season is the busiest time of the year for Paul's Place.  With supporters like you, we are able to give those less fortunate than us a holiday worth remembering.  Once again, thank you for your support during the holiday season.

Sincerely,
Jason Sharp
